Just as you would expect, dry ice blasting is 100% non-toxic. It involves the use of no harsh or toxic chemicals whatsoever, utilizing the natural power of ultra-cold ice instead. The Dry Ice Blasting ProcessAs you may know, dry ice is colder than the ice we keep in our freezers. This is because it is made of carbon dioxide rather than water, which freezes at a lower temperature. It is a perfectly safe substance which is normally used as a coolant for foods in transit. It isn't just the temperature of dry ice which makes is effective for use on mold, however. During the process of dry ice blasting, a blasting device fires the dry ice particles at contaminated surfaces at an extremely high speed. Because the dry ice is colder than water ice, it is also much stronger. This means that the dry ice is effective at breaking the bond between the mold and the substrate on which it grows, no matter how thoroughly ingrained it is. The temperature of the ice also immediately kills mold on contact. How Effective is Dry Ice BlastingIt is often assumed that environmentally friendly methods are less effective than their chemical counterparts. This is not the case with dry ice blasting. In fact, dry ice blasting can actually be more effective than conventional chemical methods. It is certainly much faster, removing mold 60 – 80% faster than traditional methods, and can reach areas where human hands could not. Because dry ice (again, unlike water) does not conduct electricity, it can even be used around electrical wires without danger. Although it is devastating to mold, its effect on the surfaces of your home is minimal.
